Responsibilities

Notary services are extremely important and it is necessary that a notary fully understand all of the accompanying responsibilities. The office of the Minnesota Secretary of State is available to assist you as a new or existing Notary Public with some basic fundamentals of notarization.

Becoming a Notary Public

To become a registered notary visit the Minnesota Secretary of State website.

Registering With Your County

If you are a licensed Notary Public, you must register your signature in your county of residence. In Crow Wing County, you may register by mail or in person at the Land Services customer service desk located at 322 Laurel Street, Brainerd on the first floor.

In-person Registration
Please complete the following steps to register your signature in our office:

  • Provide the downloaded notary certificate or the notary commission card you received from the Minnesota Secretary of State
  • Provide identification: Valid driver's license or state issued identification card
  • Pay $20 filing fee; cash, check, debit or credit card, or money order. Your commission card will be returned to you, as registered in Crow Wing County

Mail Registration
Please complete the following steps to register your signature by mail:

  • Send the downloaded notary certificate or the notary commission card you received from the Minnesota Secretary of State
  • Enclose 2 notarized samples of your signature on a separate sheet of paper
    • a signature that matches the first, middle, and last name as listed on the notary's commission and shown on the notarial stamp, and
    • a sample signature in the style in which the notary will actually execute notarial acts
  • Enclose a photocopy of your valid driver's license or state issued identification card
  • Enclose the $20 filing fee; check or money order payable to Crow Wing County Land Services
  • Your commission card will be returned to you, as registered in Crow Wing County
  • Mail the above to the address listed on the right
