Responsibilities

Notary services are extremely important and it is necessary that a notary fully understand all of the accompanying responsibilities. The office of the Minnesota Secretary of State is available to assist you as a new or existing Notary Public with some basic fundamentals of notarization.

Becoming a Notary Public

To become a registered Notary Public, visit the Minnesota Secretary of State website.

Registering With Your County

Once you have received your Notary Public commission document from the Secretary of State, you must register your signature in your county of your residence.

In Crow Wing County, you may register by mail or in person at the Land Services customer service counter, located at the Land Services building, 322 Laurel Street, Brainerd, on the first floor.

In-person Registration
Please complete the following steps to register your signature in our office:

  • Provide the Notary Public commission you received from the Minnesota Secretary of State.
    • You will sign the notary commission in front of our staff when you register, please do not sign it beforehand.
  • Provide identification: Valid government-issued photo ID.
  • Pay $20 filing fee: cash, check, debit/ credit card, or money order.
  • Your notary commission will be returned to you, as registered in Crow Wing County.

Mail Registration
 
To register your signature by mail, enclose the following and mail to

Crow Wing County Land Services, 322 Laurel St – Suite 15, Brainerd, MN 56401

  • The signed Notary Public commission you received from the Minnesota Secretary of State.
  • Two (2) notarized samples of your signature on a separate sheet of paper:
    1. Use this Signature Form (download and print.)

      Or, if you are unable to print the above form; 
      on a separate, blank sheet of paper, provide (open the form above on your computer to use as an example.):
      1. A signature that matches the name on your notary commission (first, middle, and last name.)
      2. A signature in the style in which you use to notarize documents.
      3. The signatures above need to be notarized. Note that the notary must be someone other than yourself. 
  • Enclose a photocopy of your valid, government-issued photo ID.
  • Enclose the $20 filing fee: check or money order payable to Crow Wing County Land Services.
  • Your Notary Public commission will be returned, as registered in Crow Wing County, to you by mail, using the address on your commission.
