For the last few years, Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid has been a resource for our seniors that has been difficult to access. Fortunately, Mid Minnesota Legal Aid is now back in town and has set up shop in their new location at 803 Kingwood Street in Brainerd, formerly known as the Lakes Area Senior Activity Center, now called The Center.
The St. Cloud office of Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid has received a grant of Older Americans Act funds from the Central Minnesota Council on Aging. These funds provide for legal advice, counseling and representation in court and administrative hearings.
If you reside in Crow Wing County and are at least 60 years of age, you can get assistance with various legal problems, housing issues such as evictions, as well as accessing Medicare and Social Security benefits. They will also be able to help you with many public benefits such as medical assistance, food support, fuel assistance, family law issues which include domestic abuse and income maintenance, nursing home issues, home care services, power of attorney, health care directives and debt collections.
As in the past, criminal matters, wills, estate planning or real estate planning and real estate transactions will not be handled by Mid Minnesota Legal Aid.
Contact The Center in Brainerd at 218-829-9345 for appointment and scheduling times. Seniors can also call the St. Cloud office of Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid toll free at 1-888-360-2889. These services are free of charge.
