General Investigations

The General Investigative Unit investigates a wide variety of crimes against people and property. The unit also prepares and executes search warrants, recovers stolen property, collects evidence for use in prosecution, and specializes in computer forensics which involves the recovery of electronic evidence and data for the purpose of solving crimes. The investigators also work in conjunction with other county, state and federal agencies in an effort to solve crimes.

The investigators receive specialized training in investigative techniques, arson investigation, child abuse, computer forensics, white collar crime, interviewing techniques and many other valuable skills.

Reporting Crimes

All crimes should be reported to the dispatch center. Following your call to dispatch, there may be some additional organizations that need to be made aware of the crime. There are certain types of crimes that the public will be asked to also report online after reporting to the dispatch center. Crimes involving internet fraud or child pornography are investigated by several agencies from the local level to the federal level. The IC3.Gov and MissingKids.com/Cybertipline websites serve as central collection locations and share the information with all the appropriate agencies to investigate.

To report abuse of vulnerable adults and/or an elderly person, complaints can be made to the Minnesota Adult Abuse Reporting Center (MAARC) by calling 844-880-1574 (toll free).

Anyone wishing to report a crime can contact the Sheriff's Office or Submit a Tip online.
