Hazardous Waste
Hazards in the Home
Many products commonly used in the home contain hazardous components -- ingredients that are corrosive, toxic, flammable, reactive, and/or physically or environmentally hazardous. This list of products may include such items as varnish and paint remover, fuel additives, lighter fluid, lubricants, rust and tar removers, pool chemicals, fuel cylinders, gasoline contaminated with oil or water, pesticides, and other products. Because of the potential hazard, special handling is often required when managing these products once they are no longer needed by the consumer. Such leftover household products are considered to be household hazardous waste (HHW) and can pose significant risks to human health and the environment.
Location & Hours
The Household Hazardous Waste facility is located at the Crow Wing County Solid Waste Disposal Site. This facility is open 8 am to 5 pm, Monday to Saturday / April - September and 8 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday / October - March. Commercial hazardous is not accepted at this facility. Commercial business may dispose of latex paint only at our hazardous waste facility.
Procedures
Check in at the Landfill Office for instructions and waste inspections. Proceed to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility as directed by the Landfill Office attendant.
Dangers
Household hazardous waste not only threatens the health and safety of our families and ourselves, but also causes damage to the environment. The water we drink, the air we breathe, and the fish and wildlife we enjoy here in central Minnesota can also be harmed by HHW, but it doesn’t have to be that way if people dispose of those wastes properly.
